Tax Credits and Incentives to Make Your Home More Energy Efficient.
Recently, (2009) the Federal Government implemented numerous tax incentives to help homeowner's make their home more energy efficient and environmentally friendly by giving tax credits for many home renovations and improvements that qualify. Some of the home improvement and home remodeling incentives are for replacing windows, new siding, insulating the house, roofing, replacing appliances, installing solar panels, and other types of home upgrades, and remodeling. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, abbreviated ARRA helps homeowners reduce the expense of certain home improvements by covering up to 30% of the cost of the renovation on qualified products. If you have been seriously considering getting some work done to the house now is a great time to do it with this program in place to assist in reducing your costs!
There are other advantages to having these types of improvements done to your home. The replacement products that qualify for ARRA in these projects really do work by increasing efficiency in the home, reducing outside noise, and creating a healthier more enjoyable, and comfortable living environment for the home dweller. You will see the impact of many of these home and remodeling projects on the bottom line of your energy bill, and water bill immediately each month.
With energy costs seemingly going up every year having a more energy efficient house will pay for itself after the continually noticeable savings add up. Here are a few little tips for helping to make your home more energy efficient. Home Improvement contractors some times refer to the exterior of a home as the "envelope" or the "shell." Sealing up the envelope or shell against air infiltration (air leaking into the house from outside) and air exfiltration (air leaking from inside the house to the outside) helps reduce your energy expenditure for space heating and cooling. Besides, lets face it no one likes to live in a drafty house and we all want to eliminate as much outside noise as possible like planes, cars, motorcycles, lawnmowers, etc.
There are two ways to make your home more energy efficient. First is to measure and locate what is known as electricity vampires in the home. Little electronic devices that continually "drain" small amounts of energy like DVD players, and other electronic equipment that use small amounts of electricity even when turned off for things like clocks, lights, date/time indicators. Small subtle changes that you can do yourself to eliminate these energy "vampires" will add up over time. Replacing light bulbs with energy efficient ones, locating the energy vampires and implementing simple inexpensive devices to stop the energy siphoning. Also, there are simple inexpensive easy-to-do yourself things in the bathroom and kitchen that will reduce the waste of water, and lower your energy and water bills each month. E.P.A. Next there are the home improvements where outside professional help is needed that will immediately pay off in significant lower monthly electric. and/or water bills. Replacement of siding, roofing, windows, doors, insulation, hot water heaters, and things of this nature improve home energy efficiency in leaps and bounds. However, not all energy star rated appliances and equipment are eligible for the tax credit so check with the building contractor to ensure that whatever replacement materials or appliances are being used qualify for the tax credit.
